Ruijie's Cloud Desktop for Healthcare solution is designed to build a virtualized office platform based on technological architecture which combines VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) and IDV (Intelligent Desktop Virtualization), without changing healthcare practitioners' working habits. It helps IT Department recover faster from a workstation failure, boost clinical departments' satisfaction with IT Department, and cut the total cost of ownership (TCO) of medical terminals. So far, this solution has been implemented in several tertiary first-class hospitals including The First Affiliate Hospital of USTC (Anhui Provincial Hospital) and Guangzhou Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine.

Background

In recent years, to cope with the difficulty in getting medical services for ordinary people, tertiary as well as secondary hospitals across China have turned to reconstruction and extension for more beds and higher doctor-patient ratio. As a result, terminal computers in need of maintenance surge from several hundred to several thousand in a brief period. IT Department is struggling with all kinds of terminal failures every single day, especially hardware and software problems. And even worse, high concurrency requirement during peak hours and long maintenance time result in various problems including prolonged waiting time, lower patient satisfaction, diversion of the patients in other disciplines other than the key ones, which severely damages hospitals' social and economic benefits. To solve problems in terminal maintenance, IT Department in hospitals tried in vain to cut maintenance time via scaling the establishment of the staff, as well as service outsourcing, etc. Some hospitals tried VDI solutions from virtualization vendors. However, these solutions, with defects such as high procurement cost, highly-skilled maintenance personnel in demand and clinical application experience not as good as that on PC, proved to be insufficient to solve problems technically.

Problems and Challenges

Solutions

Ruijie's Cloud Desktop for Healthcare is a virtualized solution built on VDI and IDV architecture, featuring central control and distributed running. It offers benefits of both traditional VDI desktops and IDV virtualized desktops to customers, and eliminates bottlenecks like difficulty in centralized management of traditional PC desktops and poor VDI desktop experience. It's well-suited for all scenarios in the hospital, making it the ideal solution for cloud desktop deployment in healthcare industry.

Values

● IDV local computing - no business interruption even losing connections with all servers

● Software or operating system failure recovery – just restart and the business will recover in 2 minutes

● Cloud storage service enabled by IDV+VDI - data replication and mobility are as easy as pie

● Integrated graphics on IDV terminal - GPU pass-through technology ensures smooth access to 3D images on virtual desktops

● Control peripheral strategy on-demand

VDI terminal - switching between intranets and extranets with single terminal

Successful Story

The First Affiliate Hospital of USTC (Anhui Provincial Hospital)

Cloud Desktop for Healthcare helps The First Affiliate Hospital of USTC increase the desktop operation efficiency by 6 times.

The maintenance of desktop stations puts tremendous strain on IT staff at The First Affiliate Hospital of USTC. IT staff are struggling with problems like low operation efficiency of computer terminals and affected business continuity; failure to detect any terminal when executing remote desktop maintenance; traditional cloud desktop with low reliability, poor compatibility with peripheral products and high procurement cost, etc.

The First Affiliate Hospital of USTC partners with Ruijie Networks to deliver new healthcare experience to doctors and patients with Ruijie's Cloud Desktop for Healthcare solution. Across the hospital, almost 600 virtual desktop infrastructure (IDV) terminals and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) terminals have been deployed in working stations including nursing stations, medical offices, pharmacy, reception desks, consulting rooms, laboratories, delivering an unified experience that integrates computing, storage virtualization and management. The deployment tackles difficulty in maintenance of doctors' legacy desktops and business recovery, and significantly speeds up the recovery of business, ensuring business continuity with stronger support. For the routine maintenance, it frees up the maintenance time and only 5% of working hours (used to be 30%) are spent on routine PC-related tasks, so that IT staff can focus on the upgrade and optimization of business models.
