Client Background
Ruijie BYOD deployment for Jiujiang University has thus far been the largest scale in investment cost. Here is a summary on the project highlights:
Jiujiang University in Jiangzi province is a comprehensive public university authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Education, enrolling students from 30 provinces nationwide. Its history can be traced back to 1901 when it was formerly founded as Danforth Hospital Nursing School. The university has five campuses covering an area of more than 700,000m2. The Main Campus, Xundong Campus, Lufeng Campus, Nanhu Campus and Balihu Campus are home for over 38,000 full-time students. The university has also set up a first-class affiliated hospital.
Client’s Challenges and Requirements
The five campuses of Jiujiang University have already had a comprehensive wired network and advanced digitalized campus application platform. There is a pressing need to provide access to the digitalized platform anywhere anytime at a wide range of campus venues including residential halls, classrooms, multi-media classrooms, lecture halls, conference rooms, libraries, sports centers, laboratories and so on, satisfying access demands of various end devices.
The existing wireless deployment is complex with both large open area (e.g. library) and densely packed venue (e.g. residential hall). The university wishes to provide comprehensive wireless coverage for staff, students and guests to enjoy wireless access anywhere at any time without affecting the daily teaching routines.
Summary on client’s requirements:
Four main teaching applications: residential hall, laboratory, library and classroom
1. Limit end device access based on different settings and timeslots, e.g. Mobile and PAD are not allowed to access at classrooms during lecture
2. User-based access control in different settings, e.g. Teaching staff cannot access the network at student residential halls (prevent students from illegally acquiring the teaching stuff’s account and access the network for free).
3. Item 2 and 3 have to be deployed at the same time, e.g. Students are not allowed to access the Internet after 12 midnight in the laboratory area (avoid students wasting time on Internet surfing instead of studying)
4. Provide different resource packages for each student account to cater for different settings, e.g. Residential halls provide monthly 2M bandwidth; library supports free bandwidth usage of 1M (cannot support HD video streaming but sufficient for online research)
5. Offer easy network authentication and hence offload reception staff workload onto the guests attending small-scale seminars, trainings, etc.
6. Offer easy self-help network authentication for attendants of large-scale events and conferences
Solution Features and Benefits
1. Control end device access venue and duration
Administrators can set to restrict a certain types of end devices for network access at specific venues. Access duration can also be limited. E.g. Students at teaching venues during lecture cannot access the network using mobiles or tablets.
2. Control exit bandwidth and routing
E.g. Flexible management on bandwidth allocation and routing modes at student residential halls
3. Control end device network access duration and traffic resources
Limit network access duration at different zones
E.g. Network access at student residential halls are paid on a monthly basis; Free access at teaching area; Free access for 30 hours at Entrepreneur Tower; Free trial of 5G gateway traffic at Laboratory Center
4. QR Code Authentication (Authorization)
After accessing a wireless network, users will obtain a QR code and need to get it scanned by any authorized staff’s mobile phones to gain network access. It offloads authentication onto daily guests, construction practitioners, guests of small-scale conferences and trainings, etc.
5. QR Code Authentication (Non-authorization)
This authentication highlight is suitable for large events catering hundreds of guests. No staff member is required to grant access rights to the guests at the venue. Ruijie is implementing this authentication mode at the university. When the new semester commences, users can experience unprecedented wireless access within the campus.
