With the school informatization development, the Dalian University of Foreign Languages pays more and more attention to the university's wireless network construction. It plans to build a comprehensive campus Wi-Fi and use modern information technology to promote education reform, realizing the development of educational innovation.

In 2015, the university began to build the first phase of the wireless campus network. The Ruijie simplicity wireless solution was deployed for the scenarios such as the outdoor areas, offices, teaching areas, and dormitories. The Dalian University of Foreign Languages became the first university in Dalian to adopt Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) for wireless coverage.

In 2018, with the continuous advancement of classroom reforms, the demand for interaction between teachers and students using digital products during class had been increased and the application of high-definition lesson recording had also been increased. The wireless network needs to support this revolution of teaching models. In particular, for language teaching, teachers require high-bandwidth teaching applications such as IPTV and high-definition videos. Students also need to use their own laptops to access the wireless network to view the video resources. Therefore, each student should be guaranteed with a certain amount of bandwidth.

In addition, in VR classrooms, offices, libraries, conference rooms, and lecture halls, the wireless network needs to meet the high-concurrency, high-bandwidth, and low-latency requirements in high-density scenarios, making the education reform more flexible and convenient. Based on the above requirements, the second phase of the wireless network construction of Dalian University of Foreign Languages was officially started.

New standard for the second phase project
New Wi-Fi capability

In the early stage of preparation for the second phase of the wireless network project, the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard was officially launched. Based on the advantages of Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), this standard further enhances the efficiency of spatial multiplexing by enhancing the coding and scheduling methods. This allows each AP to communicate with more devices at the same time, enabling higher-density deployment, lower latency, farther coverage, and higher speed. In addition, its improvement in low power consumption is particularly friendly to those active IoT terminals in smart campus construction.

In the early stage of construction, the university and Ruijie Networks studied the feasibility of the Wi-Fi 6 solution, taking all aspects into account including the AP performance capacity, terminal access capability, the first phase of unified management and subsequent IoT expansion. After on-site testing, the Ruijie AP of the Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) technology was finally adopted. The device adopts a tri-radio design with maximum access speed of 6.5 Gbps. Up to 3 Gbps uplink speed is supported per AP, and it also supports other modular expansion such as Internet of Things, which greatly enriches the application scenarios on campus. While meeting the bandwidth requirements of teachers and students during class, it also ensures the advancement of the solution within the next five years.

High-speed, wide-coverage and high-density wireless campus network

What are the good points about the Wi-Fi 6 network which is welcomed by the teachers and students?

  1. High speed: Compared with Wi-Fi 5, the network bandwidth and number of concurrent users are increased by 4 times, and the transmission delay is reduced by more than 60%. It can easily cope with the high-bandwidth, high-density and low-latency requirements of classrooms, canteens and libraries, providing a better network experience for teachers and students.
  2. Wide coverage: The second phase of the wireless campus network project covers indoor public areas of the university such as all classrooms, canteens and comprehensive buildings, as well as outdoor public areas such as basketball courts, tennis courts and the surrounding areas of teaching buildings.   3. High density: The second phase of the wireless campus network project adopts a high-density deployment solution in high-density areas such as classrooms and canteens. The network capacity is designed according to 80 users per wireless equipment, and cluster deployment is adopted to ensure the best network quality for every teacher and student.

In terms of application, the wireless campus network deployed in phase 2 continues the application mode of phase 1 to achieve seamless roaming for teachers and students in the wireless coverage area of the entire campus network through seamless authentication. In addition, the official WeChat services of Dalian University of Foreign Languages have been re-optimized. Detailed inquiries can be made regarding common campus network services such as network fee recharge, data traffic, self-service suspension, package change and fault repair. With the second phase of the wireless campus network project, the university can flexibly allocate network resources based on SDN features, thus becoming the forerunner among all Dalian universities.

The successful deployment and trial operation of the Wi-Fi 6 wireless campus network helped Dalian University of Foreign Languages to become a new benchmark for wireless campus networks in universities across the country.
